Robert Cywes was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa where he completed medical school. Dr Cywes moved to Canada in 1990.  At the University of Toronto, he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in minimally invasive surgery. He also obtained a PhD at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Michael Baptista was born and raised in Brazil where he attended medical school. After his general surgery training and a fellowship in thoracic surgery, he then spent several years in surgical research at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
