Single, sick and sorry was my motto in 2001. I realized that I had to do something about it. In January 2001 my husband left, in April 2001 I had a heart attack and in December 2001 my niece Cassie said she wants to be just like me when she grows up — I finally saw what I looked like in the mirror. I wasn’t overweight as a child. I am a Desert Storm Veteran and with the struggles in 2001 I just ate my way into 502 lbs. I finally started doing something about it.

My name is Luz and I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I have not known any other way of living but being fat, so I am no stranger to the teasing in childhood, and to the shame and physical struggles as an adult. I have lost weight in the past, and as it usually happens, gained it all back, and a whole lot more. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2001 and my list of medications was very long and included insulin the last four years.

Sonya will be riding in the 2011 American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure event to raise money for the fight against diabetes! Cycling has become her new passion for staying active. She is a member of the North Florida Bike Club and rides 50 miles or more on a daily basis! Since her surgery in 2009, she has lost 110 pounds! Great job Sonya.. And Keep On Riding!!

My name is Gabby and I’m 35 years old. I started putting on weight as a teen, by the time I was 19 years old I weighed 290lbs. I struggled with my weight for so many years. I was always the fat friend or the fat sister. I married at 20 and struggled with infertility for 8 years due to my weight. In 2003 I had twin girls and my weight climbed up to 300 lbs. I was able to get down to 260 after having my twins.

“This was my first 5k. Walked/jog it in 54:34! For me this is a great time because back in September I know I would not have been able to do a 5k! It was great to be with other from the Jacksonville Weight Loss Center. I made some new friends and learned a little about myself on this 5k!”

Team Hall Climbers climbed 42 stories equaling 838 steps to benefit the American Lung Association at the Bank of America building in downtown Jacksonville on February 3. Gail (number 345 on the far left) is one of Jacksonville Weight Loss’s most successful patients losing over 100 pounds! Now she is climbing stairs and will be participating in the Gate River Run coming up this March. Great job Gail and keep up the good work!

My impression was that Dr.Cywes was highly competent but was uncomfortable with selling or promoting himself. I think that he vastly undersells his talents or the results of his work. A very positive trait in a great doctor, but not necessarily for somebody who needs to convince nervous doubting surgery candidates that they’re doing the right thing and that he’s the best doctor to help them.
