One of the newer exercise trends in gyms involves bouncing on mini trampolines. Trampoline fitness is a great way to relieve stress while you have fun after weight loss surgery in Jacksonville. Unlike jumping on a typical backyard trampoline, during a trampoline fitness workout you don’t concentrate on how high you jump. Instead, trampoline fitness encourages you to concentrate on the speed that you jump and on increasing your heart rate. Everyone in a trampoline fitness class jumps at the same speed, and concentrates more on jumping down at the appropriate tempo than on jumping up high in the air. You won’t perform a lot of complicated tricks, but you will get some variety through twisting moves and variations in arm movements during the workout.

Trampoline workouts involve high intensity exercise, so they help you to burn a lot of calories and lose weight. However, they don’t put a lot of stress on your joints, making them a good alternative for people trying to avoid high impact exercises like running. Not only do trampoline workouts help you burn calories, they also help to strengthen your muscles, including your abdominals and core muscles as well as your thighs and other leg muscles. You will slim down and get toned at the same time.

These workouts can also add some variety and keep you motivated to exercise. Motivation is a common problem for people when it comes to exercise. Most people do not get the recommended amount of exercise, which is approximately 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise most days of the week for people trying to maintain their weight and twice that for people who are actively trying to lose weight. Once your body is ready to start working out after weight loss surgery, give jumping a try to enhance your weight loss efforts.

Being overweight or obese can cause a wide variety of health conditions, many of which one may not automatically connect to their excess weight. However, undergoing bariatric surgery such as the Lap Band procedure in Jacksonville can help relieve many of these health burdens, including gum disease. According to a recent study, individuals that underwent bariatric surgery benefited from improved gum health, in addition to relief from other, more common obesity-related diseases.

A recent study evaluated two groups of people and evaluated the health of their gums. One group had weight loss surgery, and the other group did not have any weight loss treatment. The group that had weight loss surgery had a bigger improvement in the health of their gums as compared to the group with no weight loss. The researchers think that the possible reason for the healthier gums might be due to the fact that weight loss tends to reduce a person’s insulin dependence, and inflammation throughout the body melts away with the fat. Since gum disease is a condition of inflammation, it makes sense that inflammation of the gums could be reduced with weight loss.

Lap Band surgery is a safe and effective method that can help those who have struggled to lose weight finally begin living a healthier lifestyle. In addition to gum disease, weight loss and bariatric surgery can treat or reduce your risk for developing type-2 diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

If you have had a lap band procedure in Jacksonville, you will have to do some extra planning before you travel. You will need to continue following the recommended diet as closely as possible. In order to do this, it is helpful to bring some items with you both on the plane and in your checked luggage so that you know you will always have something to eat when you’re in a pinch.

You can’t count on the airport having food that is appropriate for you to consume, and the food service on the plane, if there is any, most likely will not have very good options either. Bringing some fruit, nuts, cheese and lunch meat along with protein powder to mix with bottled can help with this. By having snacks you can ensure that you will have something appropriate to eat during your wait in the airport and during the plane ride. Although you may not have much trouble finding food you can eat once you reach your destination, it is a good idea to put some snacks that are high in protein such as protein bars, nuts and protein powder in your suitcase just in case you are unable to find something better.

Once you get where you are going, make sure that you do not skip breakfast or any other meal. Carrying bottled water along with protein bars and protein powder while you are out sightseeing means you will always have a meal handy. If you eat out at restaurants, then make sure that you choose food that is low in calories but high in protein and fiber.

Don’t let your trip be an excuse not to exercise, as this is important to offset the extra calories you are likely to consume while you are on your trip since you have to rely on restaurants for many of your meals. When planning a vacation, try picking a spot that involves a lot of sightseeing by foot, as all of the walking will help you burn calories while you have fun.

As the Baby Boomers age, many have begun to consider whether weight loss surgery is a viable option in elderly obese patients. Seniors in Gainesville and elsewhere who have considered the lap band procedure, but hesitate because they fear complications can rest easy. Recent research shows that elderly people who undergo weight loss surgery are no more likely than their younger peers to experience serious side effects.

Researchers examined the experiences of 50,000 bariatric patients between 2005 and 2009. Of those in the study, 1.92% in 2005, and 4.7% in 2009 were elderly. Overall, the percentage of weight loss surgery patients who were elderly was 4%. Elderly patients tended to spend longer in the hospital after bariatric surgery but did not experience side effects that were any worse than those experienced by younger patients. There was no correlation shown between advanced age and complications such as blood clots or heart attacks. They did, however, discover links between age and weight-related illnesses such as diabetes and kidney problems.

Experts have recommended that 65 years old be the cut-off age for bariatric surgery. However, some doctors admit that this age cut off is somewhat arbitrary. Doctors should evaluate each patient’s individual state of health to determine whether bariatric surgery carries too much risk. Medicare covers bariatric surgery, which can make the procedure affordable for those who do not have private health insurance.

Still wondering “what is bariatric surgery?” Visit a bariatric surgeon in the Gainesville and Jacksonville area to discuss what surgery entails, and what options are available to you.

Losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be a difficult task for most people. Those who are considering bariatric surgery as a weight loss option may want to jump start their efforts by looking at the new facts about body fat and carbohydrates.

Eliminating simple carbohydrates from your regular diet can help you not only lose weight, but can also help greatly reduce body fat. According to recent medical studies, even a modest reduction of carbs can drastically reduce abdominal fat. When paired with weight loss, the study showed there was a major reduction in not only abdominal fat, but in overall body fat as well.

Lap band surgery candidates can lose weight and body fat by reducing simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, sweet treats, white bread, pasta, crackers and white rice. These foods are high in carbohydrates and give no nutritional value and are loaded with empty calories that help you pack on the fat. The reduction of carbohydrates is a lifelong diet that you should continue to follow even after your bariatric surgery that will help you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.

While reducing the “bad” carbs, you should strive to continue to eat complex carbohydrates that are found in foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits, low-fat dairy products and vegetables. These are the carbs that are healthy for you and give important nutrients that your body needs.

Losing weight and reducing body fat via the reduction of carbohydrates in your diet not only provides a better looking you, it greatly reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, stroke and coronary artery disease.

If you are considering lap band or a bariatric surgery procedure, contact a Jacksonville bariatric surgeon to discuss your options to see which procedure would work best for you.

Bariatric surgery, such as Lap Band surgery in Jacksonville, Florida, is a cost-effective solution for people who are mildly or severely obese, according to a recent study by the Washington University School of Medicine. Because people who undergo weight loss surgery are more apt to keep extra weight off in the long term, they are prone to less health problems, which is an overall good economic value. Further, weight loss surgery ultimately saves the severely obese patients money in health care costs due to reduced medical expenditures for disease like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The researchers examined data of weight loss surgery patients and their quality of life and life expectancies against those who didn’t have bariatric surgery. The study examined a cost-effective surgery metric called the quality-adjusted life year, or QALY. QALY is a standard medical treatment value measure that looks at one’s length and quality of life. In order for a medical treatment to be considered cost effective in the United States, the limit is $50,000. This means that any treatment less than $50,000 is deemed to be cost-effective.

The study findings showed that for the moderately obese who have a BMI between 35 and 40, the QALY was $3,900 and under (clearly below the $50,000 benchmark), and those with a BMI of 40 to 50, the QALY was at or below $3,800. The QALY was negative, which means the cost of weight loss surgery was less than the healthcare costs without having the surgery, for those with a BMI of 50 or higher.

The study is important because it identifies the cost-effectiveness of weight loss surgery across BMI categories, while also offering additional support for the FDA approved Lap Band surgery.

For people who are morbidly obese with co-existing medical problems such as diabetes, sleep apnea, liver inflammation, cardiopulmonary vascular disease, degenerative joint disease, loss of vein function and other conditions, bariatric surgery is an effective long-term treatment. Now, according to an October Archives of Surgery report, morbidly obese high-risk people who lose five to 10 percent of their body weight before undergoing bariatric surgery seem to have faster post-operative weight loss and a shorter hospital duration immediately following the surgical procedure.

In a study conducted between 2002 and 2006, researchers at Geisinger Health System assessed 884 patients, with an average age of 45, who had underwent bariatric surgery consisting of open or laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. Prior to surgery, participants were required to participate in medical, nutritional, and psychological education programs. Participants were also urges to lose 10 percent of their body weight prior to surgery.

Of the 884 patients, 19 percent (169) lost between five and 10 percent of their excess weight before their operation, and 48 percent lost 10 percent of their excess weight preceding surgery.

The results of the study showed that the patients who lost more than five percent of their excess weight before bariatric surgery, were less likely to have a hospital stay longer than four days. Moreover, patients who lost 10 percent of their excess weight before weight loss surgery were two times as likely to have achieved 70 percent of their weight loss goal one year following surgery when compared to those who only lost up to five percent of their excess weight prior to their bariatric operation.

Weight loss surgery is becoming more accepted throughout the medical community. While medical weight loss programs are extremely beneficial, many still find it difficult to lost weight. More people turn toward bariatric surgery with the hope of losing the weight and becoming healthier. Recently, a new study showed that obese patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease and heart failure can truly benefit from bariatric surgery procedures.

The study released at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in November of 2010 shed more light on the benefits of bariatric surgery for heart failure patients over the more accepted route of medical weight loss.

The study data was gathered over a fifteen year period between 1990 and 2005. The study followed thirteen patients who chose bariatric surgery as an option for reducing their weight as well as reducing the risks associated with their heart disease. This group was compared with another group of six heart failure patients who were guided along the non-surgical path and were observed in the Mayo Clinic’s Nutrition program.

Although it was a small group of study participants the data gathered was indicative that a much larger group would show similar results. In patients who went along the weight loss surgery route, the average BMI was reduced from 53 to 37. In comparison, the non-surgical group saw an increase in average BMI from 42 to 45. Researchers also took note that the surgical patients experienced an overall increased quality of life when compared to the non-surgical group, including reduced swelling in the legs and an improved level of labored breathing during exercise.

The benefits seen in patients who had bariatric surgery were significant and the study also points out that the patients saw these benefits even though they were still categorized as obese and had not reached their target weight.
