Lean Teens

Bariatric Surgery for adolescents is a difficult decision for both physicians and parents.  But research has shown that childhood obesity has tripled over the past 30 years.  Obese adolescents are at risk of being diagnosed with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.  Fortunately, weight loss surgery offers a high resolution rate for younger patients who have not suffered these conditions for long periods of time.

Patients and their families undergo a treatment preparation phase prior to surgery that is vital to the success of the surgical process and that continues as a process of lifestyle change following the surgery.

Leading the Nation in Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery

Our first adolescent Lap-Band procedure was in 2005 and since, we have performed the largest number of adolescent weight loss surgeries in the nation, with the youngest being 10 years old.  We are dedicated to treating the true cause of obesity and always have our patient's best interest in mind.

If you are interested in learning more about our Lean Teen adolescent program, please contact us for a consultation.

Note: Currently, insurance companies are not covering bariatric surgery in patients under 18 years of age.

The Junior Weigh Medical Weight Loss Program

Junior Weigh is a medically supervised conservative weight loss and maintenance program for children and adolescents.  It is designed to guide patients through a 24 week program where they will work with a team of specialists to meet their weight loss and lifestyle change goals.

Our Team Includes:

  • Physician
  • Registered Dietician
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor
  • Weight Loss Counselor
  • Certified Fitness Trainer

Together, the team pinpoints factors in the child's everyday lifestyle that likely led to his or her obesity and together we create a personal plan to initiate a process of lifestyle change.

Family-based treatment is more effective over the long term.  Parents will learn to recognize the child's emotional overeating and work on nutritional skills, setting limits and increasing activity levels.

The Junior Weigh aims to achieve:

  • a successful lifestyle change
  • resolution or improvement of obesity-related co-morbid conditions
  • safe and sustained weight loss
  • improved self-esteem and body image

Obesity and the related Metabolic Syndrome is not the problem, it is the result of a particular lifestyle.  Our objective is to help to change the lifestyle that caused the obesity in the first place.

IS YOUR CHILD A CANDIDATE FOR TREATMENT?

If you think your child is at risk for having a weight problem or developing Metabolic Syndrome, you need to talk with their pediatrician.  Ask your child's doctor about their Body Mass Index (BMI) or growth rate.  Together, you can decide if The Junior Weigh is right for your family.  A referral from the patient's primary doctor is required to enter the program. Once you have obtained the referral, please contact us to schedule a consultation with our physician.
